Marriage and Family Therapy Program Mission

Our mission is to prepare students to serve others as practicing marriage and family therapists. We provide a wealth of diverse and practical experiences, research opportunities, and attentive supervision. Our focus is to inspire students to excel academically, professionally, and personally. We aim to create culturally competent, ethical, and effective therapists who strive to make valuable contributions to the profession of marriage and family therapy and their communities.

The missions of the UT MFT Program, the Psychology Department, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, and UT are united in their commitment to academics, diversity, and service. Our goals as an MFT program align with the overarching principle of UT to enrich the professional and personal lives of students and community by providing opportunities that engage the unique Southern Utah environment and resources.

Program Options

The MMFT program is ideally suited for those interested in a traditional career as a clinical mental health practitioner specializing in family relationships, while the M.S. in MFT program will provide additional experience for those interested in pursuing a doctoral degree in MFT. In order to be accepted into the MS in MFT, you will need to complete the first semester in the program demonstrating written, statistical and research proficiency.

Career Options

The MFT program provides all coursework and supervised clinical experience needed to prepare students for Utah state licensure, meeting the requirements of the Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL), and clinical careers in marriage and family therapy. The Master in Marriage and Family Therapy (MMFT) degree is a 45-credit program, while the Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy (M.S. in MFT) degree is a 51-credit program.

The MMFT program is ideally suited for those interested in a traditional career as a clinical mental health practitioner specializing in family relationships, while the M.S. in MFT program will provide additional experience for those interested in pursuing a doctoral degree in MFT. The M.S. course load includes a two-semester Thesis course taken during the last two semesters of the 5-semester Master’s program. An additional 3 credit hours will be added to the M.S. student’s course load for each of these two semesters when the Thesis course is taken.

The UT MFT program is designed to align with the educational requirements for Licensure in the state of Utah. Upon graduation from the UT MFT program, students should be eligible for licensure as an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist. As the UT MFT program does not influence the decision of the Utah licensing board, we cannot guarantee licensure.
